A Review of Brotherhood in Death By Author J.D Robb

A Review of Brotherhood in Death By Author J.D Robb

Excerpt from the Jacket

Sometimes brotherhood can be another word for conspiracy. . . .

Dennis Mira just had two unpleasant surprises. First he learned that his cousin Edward was secretly meeting with a real estate agent about their late grandfather’s magnificent West Village brownstone, despite the promise they both made to keep it in the family. Then, when he went to the house to confront Edward about it, he got a blunt object to the back of the head.

Luckily Dennis is married to Charlotte Mira, the NYPSD’s top profiler and a good friend of Lieutenant Eve Dallas. When the two arrive on the scene, he explains that the last thing he saw was Edward in a chair, bruised and bloody. When he came to, his cousin was gone. With the mess cleaned up and the security disks removed, there’s nothing left behind but a few traces for forensics to analyze.

As a former lawyer, judge, and senator, Edward Mira mingled with the elite and crossed paths with criminals, making enemies on a regular basis. Like so many politicians, he also made some very close friends behind closed—and locked—doors. But a badge and a billionaire husband can get you into places others can’t go, and Eve intends to shine some light on the dirty deals and dark motives behind the disappearance of a powerful man, the family discord over a multimillion-dollar piece of real estate . . . and a new case that no one saw coming.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

I have read every in Death book that has been released to this point one of my favorite times is when I can sit down and connect with my old friend Eve Dallas and her hunky king of the world husband Roarke. This book is just as good as the ones in the past I do not understand how J,D Robb keeps these books as interesting and relevant as the first one. This is the 42nd book in the series from what I understand from her interviews she plans on writing many more and stopping when Eve and Roarke have a child but that is not confirmed. What I like about these books is while there is a lot of futuristic aspects (Auto chef anyone) they are not so overly done that it seems that out of reach, a lot of time a when an author is writing about the future they try to add too many gadgets and make the world overly complicated.

I feel like this book showed me Eve’s growth at one time she would die before suggesting using Roarke private transportation to get a state now we see her grow into accepting that she can use his help and still be a good cop. We see that while Eve still has the demons of her past however they are more in the background, she is getting to a point she can live with them and not let them override her. We still see a few nightmares but they are more in the abstract now showing that she is changing. Sometimes in stories like these the author feels the need to keep the character the same with little growth I like that Robb let her grow and change but still have that vulnerability of her past. Eve like us all has insecurities and that allows us to relate to her but this time I think the author was to callus with those insecurities. There is an issue with her and Roarke and an office I think was not well done of Robb to add it seemed out of place.

The plot of this book went to a place I was not expecting the crime that was committed that started this chain of events came out of left field for me. I loved that you really do not understand until through the middle of the book the motive behind the murders and when you find out you can see the little details that preceded the revelation in a different light and go “oh that make sense I see it now”. Part of the joy is the why and if you get the why to early it brings down the rest of the story because you know the why and the who so what is the point of reading more not an issue in this book at all.

We see the normal mix of characters we normally do She- body always there to help Eve navigate and Trueheart who is personally one of my favorite parts in this story is when we see how much he was able to grow and become a detective and what that means to Eve. We also get a better understanding of the Mira’s and their life we see one of their daughters who I did not like and am still iffy on in relation to how she interacts with Eve. Eve gets more of the true feelings of love from Dennis while he gains an understanding about Eve’s past that you find heartwarming and right. The love between Roarke and Eve is just as hot as day one the sex scenes are hot hot hot but not too overdone or often this story stands on its own without the need for a sec scene in every chapter.

I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to be a part of a wonderful story that will continue to grow as Robb writes more books. This story is a well-known formula that still hold true to making an amazing story. The mystery and build up are on par you cannot go wrong. This story will be just as relevant in 5 years as it is today that is the power of good storytelling and being able to set a story setting that the background that stays immersive but without making it over saturated. I am a believer of her stories and so far there has not been one I have not enjoyed I enjoy seeing how she helps shape the characters with each story allowing us to feel like we are growing along with them.

A Review of The Accidental Duchess (Fairbourne Quartet Book 4) By Author Madeline Hunter

A Review of The Accidental Duchess (Fairbourne Quartet Book 4) By Author Madeline Hunter

From the Back

When Lady Lydia Alfreton is blackmailed over the shocking contents of a manuscript she once wrote, she must go to the most desperate of measures to raise the money to buy back the ill-considered prose: agreeing to an old wager posed by the arrogant, dangerous Duke of Penthurst. At least Penthurst is a man she wouldn’t mind fleecing—and she’s confident she’ll win.

Penthurst long ago concluded Lydia was a woman in search of ruinous adventure, but even he is surprised when she arrives at his house ready to bet her innocence against his ten thousand pounds—a wager he only proposed to warn her off gambling.

When she loses to a simple draw of the cards, Lydia is shocked. Now, her problems are twofold: a blackmailer determined to see her pay and a duke determined to tame her rebellious ways. One misstep and Lydia could find herself ruined—or bound to the seductive.

Rating: 3 out of 5

I love books about dukes, they always catch my fancy and send me daydreaming about being swept off to a ballroom to dance a waltz with a devilish rogue . I have always enjoyed this author and while I have not loved every book by her I have enjoyed many of them. This is the 4th book in the series and I have not read the remainder of the series as of yet (I have a long to read list). There are a lot of references to the past stories in the "Fairbourne Quartet" series and if they are all like this one then I will perhaps be reading them at some point I bought this one not knowing it was part of a series.

Lady Lydia is a gambler and she is a good one until she meets the duke in our story who is a better one. The duke is a close friend to Lady Lydia’s brother and has been a part of her life since they were children this is better explained why he acts the way he does though the story. Needless to say he is always correcting Lydia and trying to remind her of how she  is supposed to act let's just say gambling and winning with reckless abandon is not what he thinks a lady should be doing.

There was a lot of character development in this story between our two main characters the Lady eventually learns to overcome her childish anger and the duke learns to bend, something that is pretty common in these stories. I thought there was too much whining involved however Lydia had been blaming and hating the duke for years over a duel. Lydia was not willing to listen to others including the duke about the reasons for the duel and its tragic result. A lot could have been cleared up right at the start if she would have simply told those she loved about her love for the departed but that would have cut down the story in the long run I suppose.

The side characters where from the previous stories and while some were interesting some were annoying to me. The Lady's Maid Sara had a lot more potential than the author gave her she was a childhood friend to Lydia but she was also quite featherbrained in this story. Her brother the Viscount Ambury who is in book two (The conquest of Lady Cassandra) annoyed me he had little interest in his sister and simply took no time or interest in interacting with her. I understand that the brother is in love and making a life with his wife and so on but his interactions with Lydia were not well thought out and made me dislike him. The duke’s aunt made me want to slap her in defense of Lady Lydia this is a good thing I was supposed to disliked her that is how she was written and I thought the author wrote her role well.

I get the point of the manuscript but for something so important it played a small role compared to the characters developing and overcoming their personal flaws. I think that even if the papers were released while it would have been as scandal, it would not have been to gallows with Lady Lydia so I couldn't really get into the life or death drama of this plot that much. The villains of the story also could have been better they came off rather idiotic and unprepared. I like dastardly villains as much as anyone but I did not get them in this story.

The story is predictable but really most are there is the lady who is compromised so they must run off and be married they come back and the battle for the hearts begin neither thinks they will fall in love yet they do in the end. I love the predictability I always know there is going to be a happy ending and the stories trend to move along the same but each time I enjoy reading it and feeling it. I do not read these books for deep thinking I read them for a little escape from life, kids, and laundry and they do the job.

This is a romance novel there is a lot of sexual tension and release along with the character’s personal demons and per usual the sex is what bring them together. The sex scenes were well written and not overly dramatic they were interesting especially the take the author had as using sex to feed Lady Lydia compulsive need for adventure that she was filling with gambling. There was just enough sexual adventure without becoming 50 shades of gray. I find it funny to read these parts of the story because they are just so out there they are amusing and add to the overall of the story.

I will most likely read the rest of the series with the exception of the conquest that features the brother, I was able to get the point of the previous books by reading this one and I felt that I did not lose much in reading them out of order. This was a good book it had a few funny moments that mixed well with the ones that were unrealistic. I will continue to read and buy books by this author especially the ones about a duke! You cannot really go wrong with this book as long as you understand it for what it is a light story that is not too deep and involved.

A Review of Harmony Black (Harmony Black Series Book 1) By Author Craig Schaefer

A Review of Harmony Black (Harmony Black Series Book 1) By Author Craig Schaefer

Excerpt from the back:

Harmony Black is much more than your average FBI special agent. In addition to being a practicing witch, she’s also an operative for Vigilant Lock, an off-the-books program created to battle occult threats—by any means necessary. Despite her dedication to fighting the monsters threatening society, Harmony has become deeply conflicted about her job. Her last investigation resulted in a pile of dead bodies, and she suspects the wrong people are being punished for it.
While on a much-needed vacation, Harmony gets pulled back into action. This time, though, she’s gone from solo work to being part of a team. Their target: The Bogeyman, a vicious and elusive figure…and the creature that destroyed Harmony’s childhood.

Surrounded by quirky, fascinating characters as dedicated to one another as they are to their new partner, Harmony must learn to trust her team—and a new romantic interest—on a dangerous and deadly mission that conjures up memories she’d much rather forget.

Rating: 3 out of 5

I really wanted to love this book it had such a good premise that is right in my sweet reading spot. I bet you saw the “wanted to “I began reading this book and usually I start a book and cannot stop until the end (luckily I am a fast reader) I had no issues putting this one down. It was not a bad book but it was not nearly as good as it could have been with a few tweaks to the story and some character development.

This is a story about a young female FBI agent who is also a witch working for a black ops division of the FBI. Such as promising story there was so much the author could have done with this and so very many possible ways he could have made us love this character Harmony Black. I never felt that pull of a character with Harmony that I normally do with a main player in a story there are a few reasons for this disconnect but I honestly want to care about the people I am reading about I want to feel their trumpets and get a little weepy when they fail mostly the only thing I felt though this book was a desire to go and read different book.

There was not enough backstory to about Harmony Black who is she? How did she get her powers? We know they come from her mother's side but what more is there too it? How Many other witches are in this world is there a coven or some kind of society for them? None of this is addressed just simply “one day my mom shot magic at a monster and taught me to use magic” keep in mind Harmony is around 7 or so when this happens so you're telling me that in all that time she never saw magic from her mom before? That honestly is all there was to the backstory of her magic. Part of the best journeys of stories like this is to learn how the character developed her magic, how she or he feels connected to others, I got none of this connection I feel I know nothing of this magic and that is a disappointment.

During this book I was really hoping the author was going to build up Harmony and make me fall in love with this character there have been times in past books where I start off not really liking the main character but by the end I grow to enjoy them and know them. Instead of that gradually like I normally find Harmony comes off as a by the book boring backdrop to the other livelier characters in the book. I never found myself liking Harmony while she had some back and forth about blurring the lines in her by the book black and white life in the end predicatively she always leaned on the right side of boring and predictable.

The plot holds some interest it could have been better but it was good you have the tragedy that the main character is trying to overcome followed by the new interest and/or friendship then you get the emotional rawness of abducted children followed with a really creepy villain and in the end the hero wins and the villain is defeated. While this story has all that it was not written in a way that made crazy for the next line or wish for the next book. I honestly think that it was the character and not the story that I have issue with.

I honestly loved the idea of the boogeyman in this book and the way the author went with the villain it was creepy and emotional especially since it was dealing with children something that always tugs at you. The emotional tragedy that was put upon Harmony as a child due to this villain perhaps this leads to her need for order it certainly leads to her need for justice. The way they worked magic for the other characters in this book was interesting a little more explanation would have been nice but overall the premise and creepiness was there in relation to the villains in this story was good and is what keep me reading.

The other villains and a few possible allies (got to love the body hoppers) were pretty entertaining and had the right amount of creepy and downright dirty. There was a lot of childhood trauma in this book and since it at its core is about the boogeyman that is not surprising so be prepared to feel a little scared for your own children while and after reading this book. There are a lot of action paragraphs in this story something that is always good and one of the few times you get a glimpse into what Harmony could have been as a character. There is nothing I love more than a shootout with a demon!

The sidekicks because let's face it there are always side kicks in these stories you love them or are annoyed by them but there are always sidekicks. Harmony's new partner is an emotionally scarred young agent who had a tragic childhood (insert lively shared tragic childhood commiseration here). Honestly I loved the partner I thought she had real emotional issues that over time I am sure will come to light and lead her to new places. I really liked reading about her more than the main character Harmony she was funny, crazy, and a lot out there.

Also in the sidekick line up was an agent that was hurt in the line of duty and now plays a more research and profile role I do not want to spoil what happens in the line of duty but it plays a part in some of the other character’s development. The computer whiz kid that can hack into pretty much anything and I love simply because the author brought up my favorite MMO World of Warcraft in relation to him. After finishing the story, I didn't think that we saw enough of these two they had light cameos even though they were right there traveling with Harmony. The four of them staying in the same hotel and so on yet we only get a few brief intermissions with them and this is a shame.

There always seems to be a love interest in these stories this one is no different however this one seemed more like an afterthought, I felt like the author thought “well this is what is supposed to be in there so I will add it”. The love interest held some good possibilities but in the end I found him lacking and starts off too Ernst followed by too down in the dumps by the end. I found myself wishing the body hoping demon and Harmony would make a go of it that would have been interesting. It's difficult to take a story like this and try and add romance into the mix if you do it right it is amazing if you don’t it brings down the story I wish the author would have just left this out and came up with a better option in the next book.

All in all, this is not a bad book would I read the next one in the series yes, if it was another free or highly reduced option because I believe there is a lot of hope for the premise of this story line. I hope the author take into mind how to make Harmony a more enjoyable participant in the story instead of being outshined by her partner and other players we see in the story. There needs to be more background and information on the witches in this book maybe this is all addressed in the previous series but if you are going to make a stand alone series you need to add this in. I liked the villain and think the author excelled at making them unique and I find the idea of how he does Hell in this series interesting and something I would like to know more about maybe this is going to be a story line as the books progress.
